Topic: “Practical Cybersecurity: Where You Fit into the Big Picture

A growing area of concern in safety is cybersecurity.  Besides the “internet of things” (systems that are reachable on the internet that people are not completely aware of), safe practices on the internet are essential.  Learn how hackers attack, and gain some hands-on experience on how to defend your system and your company’s privileged information.

You are invited to bring your computer to the meeting to experience some hands-on learning on the subjects of:

  • Anti-virus and anti-root-kit software
  • Backing up your data
  • Firewalls (erecting and getting through)
  • File transfers (encrypt always)
  • Encryption: VPN
  • Encryption: Adobe certificates
  • Encryption: OpenPGP
  • Email
  • Social Engineering
  • http versus https
  • Metadata

Speaker: Dr. Elizabeth Jensen

Dr Jensen began working with computers at Texas A&M University while earning her degree in Geophysics.  This included the somewhat memorable experience of her account getting shut down when the finite elements modeling code she wrote took over the server.  She also worked as a student at NASA/JSC and unknowingly became one of the vectors through which Ehud Tenenbaum hacked into NASA.  While earning her masters at MIT and PhD at UCLA in Space Physics, the cybersecurity of massive data sets became increasingly high priority.  Part of her work included the processes and procedures JPL/IT developed to address the risk: VPNs, encryption, and data security training.  Over the past decade of consulting, she has had to secure the network for ACS Engineering & Safety and Referee PAC.  On the other side of the cybersecurity coin, she also had to develop techniques to negotiate the firewall at NASA/JSC for running programs required for data analysis.
