The Occupational Safety and Health Professional will ensure compliance with all applicable regulations (internal and external) and to continuously improve safety, health, and environment (SHE) awareness and performance at the plant site by developing and assisting in the implementation of programs and systems that will result in the prevention of injury and adverse health effects to employees and increase their capability to work safely.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate & champion safety committee and sub-committee activities to understand, implement and enforce safe work practices and other SHE policies.
  • Develop and implement work practices that will increase each employee’s ability to identify and eliminate unsafe acts of other employees, contractors, and visitors
  • Address and provide guidance on SHE questions and problems via daily interaction with shop floor and day staff.
  • Function as Subject Matter Expert (SME) of the site’s safety programs, activities, and improvements to ensure compliance with DSM SHE Requirements, local laws, and applicable standards. 
  • Provide technical expertise to all departments to help evaluate risks and cost-effectively resolve SHE issues, including recommendations from risk assessments, audits, and incident investigations.
  • Lead elements of Freeport Site’s Emergency Response program and serve as SME.
  • Show leadership by working to SHE and Quality standards and encouraging colleagues, visitors and external contractors to also behave in accordance with those standards.
  • Display and promote positive safety behaviors at all times; use proper personal protective equipment, appropriate safety tools, equipment and procedures to ensure that self and others go home safe each day; that area and equipment operate at the highest safety levels; that all people in the area comply with the safety directives and keep the area neat and clean.
  • Follow all SHE instructions and procedures to include ensuring awareness of and following all DSM Life Saving Rules.  Act is such a way that safety awareness and accident prevention are considered in performing all tasks.
  • Support and follow the policy of reporting incidents, near misses and improvement possibilities.

You Bring

  • Bachelor degree in science, engineering, or other technical specialty related to safety, health and environmental practices.  
  • 3+ years of experience in the field of occupational or chemical industry safety in an industrial environment such as a chemical plant.
  • Knowledge of Behavioral Based Safety Programs (e.g. SafeStart) is required.
  • Working knowledge of SHE regulations (29 CFR 1910, 29 CFR 1926, 40 CFR, 49 CFR).
  • Experience assessing operational risks.
  • Demonstrated success collaborating and working in a team environment and coordinating multiple resources without direct supervision.
  • OSHA Special Government Employee (SGE) preferred.
  • Experience with OSHA Process Safety Management.
  • Certified Safety Professional or equivalent preferred.
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of RC 14001.
