Safety Programs Intern

API – Houston, TX

The COS/System Program Intern will provide operational and administrative support for Houston-based Systems Programs and the Center for Offshore Safety (COS) teams.  These two departments assist the oil and gas industry by providing programmatic support and industry audit/assessment offerings to best enable good practice sharing and continuous improvement in industry operations. 

The intern will assist with planning and execution of meetings with industry subject matter experts (Process Safety, Asset Integrity, Safety and Environmental Management Systems (SEMS), Pipeline Safety Management Systems (PSMS), etc.), and will participate in work groups to support the development of COS good practice documents.  

The intern will also work to analyze industry benchmarking data for trends and areas for further research and development for API’s safety assessment programs, including potential additional assessment programs.

Projects and Tasks

  • Assist in digitizing business processes for API safety assessments
  • Data analysis – trending and correlation of safety assessment data
  • Support API at industry policy/governance teams meetings
  • Review safety assessment outputs for potential updates on report templates and branding
  • Research and develop outreach plans to international sites for participation in API programs
  • Review programs with API leadership, creating suggestions for improvement
  • Support the Center for Offshore Safety (COS) upstream workshop on offshore decommissioning
  • Support the development of guidance for offshore inspectors related to grating and corrosion
  • Upgrade and maintenance of the COS document library and document control process


  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in
    • Environmental Science/Management, Occupational Health and Safety, or Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Petroleum, etc.); 
    • Experience in the Oil and Gas Industry, Regulatory Policy – Safety and Environmental, Management Systems experience, and/or Project Management preferred 

Physical Requirements

  • Able to remain in a stationary position working on a computer
  • Move about the office to access office machinery, meeting rooms, etc. 
  • Operate a computer and other office machinery such as printers and copy machines
  • Transport items and equipment up to 25 lbs. on occasion

Travel Requirements

  •  Up to 25%
